Hardide-MFV Develop New HT/HP Subsea Valve Coating

first_imgHardide Coatings and Master Flo Valve (MFV) have developed a new solution to protect high temperature, high pressure (HT/HP) subsea choke valves. The valves are the first of their kind to feature the Hardide-T coating, which can be applied to choke valve stems so they can withstand temperatures up to 400°F and pressures of 20,000 psi.Canada-headquartered MFV found that alternative hard coatings previously applied to the stem assembly were not rated to sufficiently high temperatures. The challenge was to have a durable coating with a completely smooth finish to form a tight metal to metal seal. The two companies worked together to engineer a solution and develop a manufacturing process plan.Philip Kirkham, CEO of Hardide Coatings, said: “The subsea market is constantly evolving and we must react to the changes. Developments in coating technology for HT/HP applications were essential and we have worked with MFV to create the right solution for them. Its success has been demonstrated by qualification to all API requirements and deployment deepwater for a major oil and gas operator.“Hardide-T is one of our toughest coatings and has overcome a key challenge for MFV. It is used on two of their product lines and has the potential to expand into other subsea choke valve sizes and models with HT/HP requirements.”Hardide Coatings and MFV oversaw the manufacturing process and fine-tuned it to ensure specific surface finish and geometrical tolerance requirements were met.The coating has been applied to MFV’s P4-15K choke valve, which is rated from -20°F to 400°F and 15,000psi, and the P4-20K choke valve, which is rated to the same temperatures but a greater pressure of 20,000psi.They are typically installed on subsea production trees and are used for single/multi-phase production or water/chemical/gas injection. There is also an application for use on a capping stack, designed to be deployed in the event of a blow-out situation.last_img read more

Saints captures first win of 2010 on road at UFV

first_imgFraser Valley was quick out of the gates in the third period and made the game close, as back-to-back goals from Travis Gorman and Graham Fast drew the Cascades within one. But Leighton Allsop’s goal at the midway point of the period provided insurance before Caleb Roy scored into an empty net with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. The Cascades found themselves in penalty trouble for much of the game, as Mike Wilson and Chris Price picked up cross-checking and elbowing majors in the first and second periods respectively. And the Saints made their hosts pay with the man-advantage, striking for three goals in the second and finishing 3-for-7 on the night. Georgetti was named the game’s first star with two goals — including the game winner — and three points, while Roy and Allsop each scored and assisted. Spensor Wong was strong between the pipes for the Saints, making 37 saves on a night where his team was outshot by a 40-28 margin. Cullen, Gorman and Nathan Sagert each had two points in the defeat for Fraser Valley, who received 23 saves from netminder Rhys Chesney.  Next up for the Saints is a home game double header against Simon Fraser University on Nov. 5 at 7pm and Nov. 6 at 4pm, all at the Castlegar Complex. This article is a press release from Selkirk College. Invest in South African mining: Zuma

first_img Source: BuaNews 29 September 2010 South Africa offers mining investors huge growth potential and proven economic and political stability, President Jacob Zuma told business people at a gala dinner hosted by the Antwerp World Diamond Center on Tuesday. Zuma, in Belgium for the third annual European Union-South Africa summit, said the successful hosting of the 2010 Fifa World Cup had “demonstrated to the world that we are a country that can deliver on its undertakings.” Zuma said the mining industry has been the foundation for economic development in South Africa for well over a century. “Despite considerable diversification of our economy in the recent past, the mining sector remains a key variable in our economic growth equation.” In 2009, the mining industry contributed more than 30 percent to the country’s total export revenue, and employed 9 percent of the country’s economically active population. “That is currently just below half-a-million direct jobs and a further half-a-million indirect jobs,” Zuma said. “As the global economy recovers, and the demand for commodities increases, real opportunities for maximum returns in the mining sector exist.” He said South Africa was well-placed to take full advantage of improving prospects in the sector. “Our country continues to host significant known reserves of mineral commodities, with almost 60 minerals being actively mined,” Zuma said, adding: “A large number of these known reserves were discovered using conventional exploration methodologies and technologies.” South Africa’s mineral assets, excluding energy commodities such as coal, uranium and thorium, are currently valued at around US$2.5-trillion, with estimates suggesting that the country’s mineral resources would be exploitable for over a century to come. This was supported by extensive existing mining infrastructure, enabling investors to obtain maximum value from their investment in South Africa while at the same time contributing to socio-economic development.last_img read more

From Plaintiff to Partner: PicApp’s Photographers Embrace WordPress

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Early this morning PicApp announced a partnership with Automattic and integration with WordPress. More than 7.5 million publishers on WordPress’ hosted service will gain access to 20 million stock images from services like Getty, Corbis and Jupiter Images. The one caveat with these images is that there is advertising embedded in them. While the blogosphere continues to debate the depth of image content, the true significance of the announcement is rooted in the fact that a new era of collaboration is upon us. In the past, photography sites have looked to PicApp’s Israeli parent company PicScout to monitor the web for copyright infringements. Once infringers were identified, rights owners would serve DMCA takedown notices to bloggers and small publishers. Today’s partnership with one of the world’s top blogging platform casts aside this adversarial approach and gives bloggers the respect they deserve as legitimate publishers, influencers and even partners. As covered by ReadWriteWeb in the past, PicApp has made efforts to differentiate itself from its parent copyright monitoring company. The company continues to collaborate with bloggers through its image sharing platform in exchange for links back to photography sites and advertisements. Since 2007, the company has signed a slew of new publishers and significantly increased its content. While some bloggers may grumble that the advertising is unsightly, there’s no denying that these simple embed codes shave precious minutes off a post. PicApp offers great quality photographs and automatic attribution and legal clearance. For professional bloggers this service can be a lifesaver for breaking news. Hip fracture surgery

first_imgDefinitionHip fracture surgery is done to repair a break in the upper part of the thigh bone. The thigh bone is called the femur. It is part of the hip joint.See also: Hip painAlternative NamesInter-trochanteric fracture repair; Subtrochanteric fracture repair; Femoral neck fracture repair; Trochanteric fracture repair; Hip pinning surgeryDescriptionYou may receive general anesthesia before this surgery. This means you will be unconscious and unable to feel pain. You may have spinal anesthesia. With this kind of anesthesia, medicine is put into your back to make you numb below your waist. The type of surgery you have depends on the kind of fracture you have.If your fracture is in the neck ofthe femur (the part just below the top of the bone) you may have a hip pinning procedure.During this surgery:You lie on a special table. This allows your surgeon to use an x-ray machine to see how well the parts of your hip bone line up.Thesurgeon makes a small incision (cut) on the side of your thigh.Special screws are placed to hold the bones in their correct position. This surgery takes 2 – 4 hours. If you have an intertrochanteric fracture (the area below the femur neck), your surgeon will use a special metal plate and special compression screws to repair it. Often more thanone piece of bone is broken in this type of fracture.During this surgery:You lie on a special table. Thisallows your surgeon to use an x-ray machine to see how well the parts of your hip bone line up.Thesurgeon makes a surgical cut on the side of your thigh. The metal plate or nailis attached with a few screws. This surgery takes less than 1 hour.Your surgeon may perform a partial hip replacement (hemiarthroplasty) if there is concern that your hip will not heal well using one of the procedures above. Hemiarthroplasty replaces the ball part of your hip joint.advertisementWhy the Procedure Is PerformedIf a hip fracture is not treated, you may need to stay in a chair or bed. This can lead to life-threatening medical problems, especiallyif you areolder. Because such serious problems can develop, surgery to fix the fracture is often recommended.RisksFollowing are risks of surgery:Avascular necrosis. This is when the blood supply in part of the femur is cut off for a period of time. This can cause part of the bone to die.Injury to nerves or blood vessels.Parts ofthe hip bone may not join together at all or in the correct position.Blood clots inthe legs or lungs.Mental confusion (dementia): Older adults who fracture a hip mayalready have problems thinking clearly. Sometimes surgery can make this problem worse.Pressure sores (also called pressure ulcers or bed sores) from being in bed or a chair for long periods. Before the ProcedureYou will likely be admitted to the hospital because of a hip fracture. You probablywill not be able to put any weight on your leg or get out of bed.Tell your doctor or nurse whatmedicines you are taking. This includes medicines, supplements, or herbs you bought without a prescription. On the day of the surgery:You willlikely be asked not to drink or eat anything after midnight before your surgery. This includes chewing gum and breath mints. Rinse your mouth with water if it feels dry, but do not to swallow.Take themedicines your doctor told you to take with a small sip of water. If you are going to the hospital from home, be sure to arrive at the scheduled time. After the ProcedureYou will stay in the hospital for 3- 5 days. Full recovery will take from 2- 3 months to a year. After surgery:You will have an IV (a catheter, or tube, that is inserted into a vein, usually in your arm). You will receive fluids through the IV until you are able to drink on your own.Special compression stockings on your legshelp improve blood flow in your legs. These reduce your risk of getting blood clots, which are more common afterhip surgery.Your doctor will prescribe pain medicines. Your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection. You may have a catheter inserted into your bladder to drain urine. It will be removed when you are ready to start urinating on your own. Usually it is removed 2 or 3 days after surgery. You may be taught deep breathing and coughing exercises using a device called a spirometer. Doing these exercises will help prevent pneumonia. You will be encouraged to start moving and walking as soon as the first day after surgery. Most of the problems that develop after hip fracture surgery can be prevented by getting out of bed and walking as soon as possible.advertisementYou will be helped out of bed to a chair on the first day after surgery. You will start walking with crutches or a walker. You will be asked not to place too much weight on to the leg that was operated on.When you are in bed, bend and straighten your ankles often to increase blood flow to help prevent blood clots. You will be able to go home when:You can move around safely with a walker or crutches. You are correctlydoingthe exercises to strengthen your hip and leg.Your home is ready.Follow any instructions you are given about how to care for yourself at home. Some people need a short stay in a rehabilitation center after they leave the hospital and before they go home. At a rehab center, you will learn how to safely do your daily activities on your own.You might need to use crutches or a walker for a few weeks or months after surgery.Outlook (Prognosis)You will do better if you get out of bed and start moving as soon as you can after your surgery.Health problems that develop after this surgery are oftencaused by being inactive.Your doctor and nurse will help you decide whether it is safe for you to go home after you have had this surgery to repair your hip fracture.ReferencesButler M, Forte M, Kane RL, et al. first_imgHysaj agent alerts Chelsea with fresh Napoli transfer warningby Carlos Volcano10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveThe agent of Elseid Hysaj won’t rule out leaving Napoli in January. The fullback was close to joining Chelsea last summer.”He could have gone with [Maurizio] Sarri to Chelsea, but Ancelotti blocked everything,” Mario Giuffredi fumed on Radio Marte.“He even publicly said recently that he was counting on him for this last period, but the facts say that in the last four games, Hysaj has only played one.“Therefore that probably means he’s not too important for the Coach. If Ancelotti no longer considers him a starter, and wants to remove the disturbance, we’ll do it.“Hysaj doesn’t deserve this bad treatment, considering how much he’s given Napoli in the last three years, and also because it’s professionally correct to be clear in life.“Maybe it’s just a transitional phase, but every Coach makes his choices and it’s right that’s the case. So if Hysaj has become fourth choice it’s only right they communicate that to us.“If this is a transitional phase we’ll soon see Hysaj as a starter again, or at the very least playing more consistently, but if Hysaj is no longer valued by the Coach we’ll ask for a transfer in January.” TagsTransfersAbout the authorCarlos VolcanoShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Highway maintenance workers reminding motorists to slow down in work zones

first_imgDAWSON CREEK, B.C. – Officials with highway maintenance contract firms in the Peace Region are reminding motorists to slow down and respect signs in work zones now that summer construction season has arrived. The Work Zone Safety Alliance says that between 2008 and 2017, 12 roadside workers were killed and 218 were injured and missed time from work as a result of being hit by a motor vehicle. To help keep roadside workers safe, the Alliance is launching the 2018 Cone Zone Campaign, an annual road safety awareness initiative to encourage safe driving behaviours around roadside workers. The Alliance says that safe driving behaviour helps to ensure that roadside workers such as first responders, road builders, municipal workers, landscapers, flag persons, tow truck operators and utility workers return home safe to their families. The organization has released a list of things that workers need drivers to do while travelling this summer:Pay attention to temporary road signs, traffic cones and directions given by a traffic control person.Leave your phone alone.Safely slow down before reaching a Cone Zone and obey the posted speed limit.Respect the roadside as a workplace.Reduce your speed when driving near work vehicles with flashing amber, red and blue lights. If the posted speed limit is greater than 80 km/h, slow to 70km/h. If the posted speed is less than 80 km/h, slow to 40 km/h. Drivers who fail to adjust their speed or who fail to move over may receive a $173 violation ticket and three penalty points.last_img read more

Trinamool Congress district president Jyotipriya Mallick termed it as ‘an orchestrated incident’ and an attempt to win the sympathy of the people ahead of the fifth phase of elections when Bongaon goes to poll. “The car in which Thakur was travelling bears a registration of Uttar Pradesh. Five RSS people were travelling in the car. There was around Rs 25 lakh cash in the car. The BJP candidate from Bongaon was going to distribute the money among the people. The accident occurred when they were trying to flee after being chased by the locals,” Mallick told the reporters during a press conference in the district. Mallick also clarified that the other vehicle involved in the accident was not a police vehicle but was being used by the Central Forces. An FIR has been lodged against those who attacked the police who went to the spot following the incident.last_img read more
