Alan Pardew reveals Crystal Palace legend’s role in FA Cup preparations

first_img1 Steve Coppell led Palace to the 1990 FA Cup final Alan Pardew has revealed the “weight of history” he feels to end Crystal Palace’s 111-year wait for a major trophy. The Eagles take on Manchester United in Saturday’s FA Cup final at Wembley.Pardew was a player when Palace last made it this far in the competition, losing to United in 1990 in a replay after the first match finished 3-3 after extra-time.Steve Coppell, Palace’s manager at the time and a former United player, has been recruited to help Pardew scout the Red Devils before Saturday’s fixture. He has also turned to Alan Smith, Coppell’s assistant and successor, for advice.“I feel the weight of the history of not winning something,” said Pardew.“We take one final which we lost into the game, so this group of players have an opportunity to put something permanent there – a first major trophy for Crystal Palace.“One or two of these players will never play in a final again and this is an opportunity to get a winner’s medal, which is so hard. Like the Leicester players, winning the FA Cup would mean the same for us.“Steve Coppell was here; I’ve leant on him in a couple of bits. I’ve spoken to Alan Smith, looked at the history of 1990 and of the history since. It’s a club with a certain DNA. It would be good for the club and for our history for us to win something.“(There was a) great camaraderie in that (1990) group. I hope this group has that same ongoing history as we had. We’re all very close friends, it bonded us. It made this club to a degree, that cup final.“Friendships – I’d prefer those friendships to have carried through as winners. That’s the message I’ll give to my players.”Pardew has a fully-fit squad to face United except for Joe Ledley, whose fractured fibula also makes him a doubt for Wales’ Euro 2016 campaign. In a season when United have often appeared lethargic and confused, Palace’s matchwinners – Yohan Cabaye, Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie – give them a fine chance.“Man United are an athletic team who keep the ball very well,” said Pardew.“We will have to be patient. We’ll be the side who have to fight that bit harder to win, but we have got areas of the pitch where we’re slighly superior, and we have to make those areas count.“The pressure is on them all the time. They’re Man United: an historic club, the colour, the history, with names we haven’t got. (Sir Alex) Ferguson, (George) Best, (Bobby) Charlton, (Eric) Cantona… They take a different history into the game.“(We are) street football – players from different roots, from non-league and Paris St Germain. Put those ingredients together and it’s quite an exciting blend and an exciting team.“It’s a special feeling for me and my family, but I’ve tried to distance ourselves from 1990 a bit. We do carry some staff who talk about it all the time.“It’s nothing to do with this era. There’s no revenge of ‘putting it right’. It’s about this team getting to the cup final, and trying to win.”last_img read more

World T20: Himachal Pradesh Congress asks BCCI to shift India-Pakistan match from Dharamsala

first_imgHimachal Pradesh Congress on Sunday asked the BCCI to either cancel the proposed India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match slated for March 19 at Dharamsala or shift the venue. The executive of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee also criticised the secretary of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and BJP MP Anurag Thakur for the decision to hold the match in Dharamsala.”BCCI should either cancel or shift the match to other state to honour the sentiments of families of martyrs,” HPCC president Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said. (India will be tough to beat in World T20, says Steve Smith) Sukkhu also demanded that 50 per cent income from eight other matches to be played at the same venue be disbursed among the kins of those who laid down their lives in successive wars against Pakistan or during anti-terror operations. He said that Kangra is home to a large number of soldiers, including Kargil War heroes like Captain Vikram Batra and Captain Saurabh Kalia and a war memorial is located close to Dharamsala stadium.”Our party is not against holding other World Cup matches but only opposing the one against Pakistan as it would hurt the sentiments of the people, especially the families of martyrs,” he said.Sukhu also asked the BJP MP Anurag Thakur to make his stand clear on the issue as ‘he had earlier conducted a march from Kolkata to Lal Chowk in Kashmir to hoist national flag’.He said that party vice-president Rahul Gandhi would visit the state in April during which he would address major rallies and meetings in all four parliamentary constituencies.advertisementMeanwhile, the Himachal Pradesh ex-servicemen league, which has been opposing the match, has now shot off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prevail upon the BCCI to abandon it in the wake of the attack by Pakistani terrorists on Pathankot Airbase in which two jawans from the state were killed.President of the league Vijay singh Mankotia, in his letter to the PM said that since the people were mourning the deaths of their brave soldiers, they would not have ‘relished’ the slogans of ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ by Pakistani supporters during the match.”When the Indo-Pak talks can be cancelled after the terror attack, why not the cricket match,” Mankotia said, adding that over 1 lakh ex-servicemen would launch an agitation to prevent the Pakistani team from entering Dharamsala.Mankotia said that close on the heels of the Pathankot attack, two more Himachali jawans were killed during an encounter in Pulwama.Notably, former Chief Minister and BJP MP Shanta Kumar and former BJP MLA Rakesh Pathania have also opposed the match. Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has said that he would apprise the Prime Minister about sentiments of the people.last_img read more
