South Africa’s Oh-lief baby care range gets rave reviews

first_imgThe baby balm market is big business, if the success of South African start-up Oh- lief is anything to go by. The natural and organic beauty and baby product range went from being a modest home-based word-of-mouth success to an international brand in just four years, earning founders Louiza Rademan and Christine Buchanan R1-million from local bank Standard Bank in its Think Big competition to boost small business. The Cape Town-based sisters are long-time fans of natural and organic products, and when Buchanan was expecting her first child, she wanted to continue using such products. Not finding a suitable range on the shelves, the sisters turned to family recipes, and Rademan whipped up a nappy balm that worked for Buchanan’s child and received rave reviews from family and friends. The seed for what would become an international business was planted; Rademan and Buchanan attended a three-day trade show with 100 units of the balm, only to sell out on the first day. “We made 100 units for the three-day event, convinced that this would be enough. We sold the entire stock on day one. That night we mixed up another 100 jars. We sold out again the following day, and then repeated the exercise that evening, only to sell out again,’ said Buchanan. It was time to concentrate on Oh-lief Natural Products; the sisters quit their day jobs, property and architecture, to concentrate on refining their product. They still worked out of their kitchens, and kept the business to scale, putting the organic baby bum balm on sale.“After people had made an initial purchase and experienced the quality and effectiveness of the balm they purchased more,’ said Rademan. “Women buy by brand, with many using the approach adopted by Tupperware – where sales are based on women selling their product from their homes. By following a similar model, we were able to increase sales.’Rademan and Buchanan took heart at this increase in sales and expanded the olive- oil based range to include adult-focused products. They soon saw their products flying off shelves in pharmacies, health stores and independent baby stores.Rademan and Buchanan say they’ve never “had one bad debt’. That’s a feat for a small business in uncertain economic times, especially for a product that targets high- end consumers, and the partners have capitalised on this success and expanded it using modern marketing; social media, word of mouth and attractive packaging.Modern marketing, worldwide appeal“Exposure on social media may not translate directly into sales, but is essential because it creates brand awareness. “It provides an opportunity to use high-quality visuals that appeal to the market, and also to communicate directly with a pool of existing and potential customers,’ said Buchanan. The brand is now making inroads in Europe, after exhibiting at a European trade show funded by the Department of Trade and Industry. Selling in the UK and Scandinavia, it is no longer a home-based business, but manufactured at larger premises in Cape Town. It is also now going to be introduced to a wider South African market through local retailer Woolworths, which will stock the Oh-Lief luxury adult range at 25 stores.Winning the Think Big Business Champions competition is a big boost for the partners. They say they will be using the cash prize to reinforce “the quality of our product by getting it registered and certified by international bodies.. We are also looking at plans to bring Oh-lief to the attention of all South Africans.’The sisters are determined that even while they grow the brand and business, they will stay true to quality, purity and the “uniqueness of hand mixing their product’.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

BMW celebrates one million 3-Series built in SA

first_img27 February 2015The one-millionth vehicle, a BMW 3 Series Sedan, rolled off the assembly line at BMW’s South African manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria, on Thursday.Established in 1973, the Rosslyn plant was BMW Group’s first plant outside of Germany.“Globalisation has been an inherent part of our corporate strategy for more than four decades,” Harald Kruger, CEO of BMW South Africa and member of the Management Board of BMW AG responsible for production. The South African production site “represents a cornerstone” of BMW’s global production network of 30 sites in 14 countries, Kruger said, and it remained “a vivid example of a successful market entry through local production”.BMW has been producing vehicles in South Africa since 1973. (Image: BMW SA) BMW cars made in South Africa are also successful on the international stage. Since its inception, and before the establishment of a dedicated international automobile industry, BMW South Africa has exported cars.In 2014, BMW 3 Series Sedan exports from the Rosslyn line increased by more than 17%, which helped solidify BMW South Africa’s position as the country’s leading exporter of premium vehicles.BMW South Africa directly and indirectly employs more than 43 000 people: more than 3 700 associates at the plant and at the national sales organisation, as well as more than 3 700 dealership staff and about 36 000 first-tier supplier employees. In 2014, the more than 2 900 workers at the Rosslyn plant built 68 771 BMW 3 Series Sedans for the local and export markets.“With a high demand for all-wheel drive vehicles in markets such as the North American Free Trade Agreement region huge potential exists for export numbers to increase. In addition, production of the xDrive units requires skilled and highly trained production workers, which Plant Rosslyn has proved it has,” Wheels24.com reported Tim Abbott, the MD of BMW SA, as saying.Source: BMWlast_img read more

Magazines on the iPad? HP’s MagCloud Makes it a One-Click Deal

Sometimes it feels like that’s what the iPad was made for. On its second birthday from inside HP Labs, the do-it-yourself magazine publishing service MagCloud is launching a new feature that lets any magazine on the platform become iPad optimized with a single click. I’m really excited about this. It’s not the Wired iPad app, yet. But it is a whole world of other magazines. Hacker Monthly: The Print Magazine of Hacker News on the iPad? Publishers can now choose to put a spine on their magazines (which should be a big improvement), the page limit has been raised to 384 pages and, perhaps most importantly, HP will now ship printed magazines anywhere in the world. But it’s the iPad publishing and reading that interests me most. Publishers can opt-in to allowing readers to click on a link to download a magazine to the Magcloud iPad app. This is especially if price points can settle into something reasonable. I told HP’s Andrew Bolwell that what I really wanted were magazines priced like iPhone apps. Give me really good $2 magazines and I’ll buy them all day long. A $10 magazine on the iPad? Probably not. “I personally believe that the same is true for content,” he told me. “I hope the market will come to a point where content on the iPad is priced below the threshold of consideration on price.”Right now MagCloud supports simple PDF uploads, but the future is wide open, Bolwell says. Possibilities include multimedia, DRM-free publishing (there’s DRM today) and an HP-powered ad network.“We want to offer the option for people to do anything they want in the digital space,” Bolwell says. Google Combines Free Storage On Gmail, Google+ & Drive: 15GB Total

first_imgRelated Posts Google announced Monday that it has combined its free storage options across multiple apps, making it easier to manage how much space you’re using in Google Drive, Gmail, and Google+. Previously users had to separately track the 10GB of free space allotted for Gmail and the 5GB of free space allotted for Drive. Now, they have 15GB of unified space to use among all the Google apps, and any additional storage they purchase can be used wherever it is most needed. To put these changes in perspective, Google offered a clear example: Maybe you’re a heavy Gmail user but light on photos, or perhaps you were bumping up against your Drive storage limit but were only using 2 GB in Gmail. Now it doesn’t matter, because you can use your storage the way you want.Check out a screenshot of the new storage management tool and soon-to-come storage option changes below:  Tags:#gmail#Google#Google Apps#google drive#now#storage Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Serverless Backups: Viable Data Protection for …center_img How Intelligent Data Addresses the Chasm in Cloud readwrite Cloud Hosting for WordPress: Why Everyone is Mo…last_img read more

Show Me Your Decisions and I’ll Show You Your Ultimate Results

first_imgIf you show me your decisions, I’ll show you your ultimate results. Your day-to-day choices project the results you will invariably produce in the future.Small Decisions, Big OutcomesEvery decision offers you a choice between something that moves you closer to your goals or one of the many things that move you further away from what you profess to want. It is rarely a lack of knowledge that prevents one from succeeding. Everything you need to know is already known, and if it is not known to you, it is easily acquired. What prevents people from obtaining what they want is determined by the discipline to make the right decision when faced with choices. It’s all the rage to have a morning routine. There is value in starting your day with powerful rituals. All the advice you would ever need to start your day with intention is known. You can choose to wake up early without hitting the snooze button, meditate or pray or center yourself in some other way, rehydrate your body, and do some form of exercise for some reasonable amount of time. Some people start their day off in just such a fashion as I described here. More people hit the snooze button, wake up late, take no time for themselves, and drive directly to an office to begin working. They do so without taking care of the single asset through which they will produce all their results. You are free to choose for yourself what you do, but you are not free from the consequences.Everything Is Already KnownThere are no secrets to losing weight and becoming more fit. There are so many conflicting ideas that it might be confusing to some, but it’s not likely. If you end your love affair with sugar and chocolate, drop all white starchy foods, reduce your caloric intake, and walk for 30 to 45 minutes daily, you will lose weight. Those decisions are what lead to the ultimate result of more excellent health, greater fitness, greater clarity, and all-around improved well-being.No one struggles to improve their fitness because they are unsure of what to do. They struggle because of the choices they routinely make. Why You Don’t Have DealsCertain things need to be done to create opportunities when you work in sales. It is imperative that you call prospective clients to ask them for meetings. You also have to call back and professionally persist over a longer time than most are willing to endure. The amount of time and energy you exert in making calls and scheduling those meetings provides evidence of what your ultimate result will look like in the future. The decision to prospect means avoiding lesser choices when it comes to your time. You will close no deals you don’t first open.Show me the prospecting blocks on your calendar, and I’ll show you your pipeline.Who Matters MostIf you want better, stronger, more intimate relationships with the people you care about, the decision to spend time with them (and without your iPhone) will create those outcomes. That requires a decision to give the human beings you care about your full and undivided attention, something they may not be used to. If they haven’t experienced that gift for some time, it may cause them to ask about your overall health and wellness. The poor choice you might make is to have your body in one place with the better part of you somewhere far away.Your Future SecurityIt’s not difficult to acquire greater wealth. The decision to do so, however, causes people no end of problems. There is no modern banking offering that does not allow you to automatically transfer money from your checking account to a savings account and an investment account. The best way to accumulate wealth is to invest for the long term, never touching the money you set aside. The decision to set the money aside and leave it alone is difficult when your choice is a new iPhone or the red sports car you’ve had your eye on for a very long time.Small Choices, Large ImplicationsSome of the smallest decisions end up having the most significant impact on your results. If you want to improve your results, the decision to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day will not only change how you feel, the discipline itself will provide the foundation for greater productivity. The decision to prospect for the first ninety minutes of every day will pay dividends beyond anything you might accomplish by sporadically making a few calls.Instead of deciding to do this or that, you must to let Future You determine what you do. If you choose small things over bigger things, your life will be small. If you make decisions to do what you should do instead of what you want to do, you’ll have a different outcome. Both outcomes, good or bad, are inevitable. If you show me your decisions, I’ll show you your ultimate results. What is it that you want? Essential Reading! More Doctors to Join Health Sector this Year

first_img Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson, says that the Ministry is moving to boost human capital within the health sector with the addition of a number of trained personnel this year.“We are boosting the health workforce with 68 new Cuban trained doctors, who just returned to Jamaica. We also look with great anticipation for those young doctors, who will be graduating from the University of the West Indies (UWI).  So, a combined force of those doctors returning from Cuba and those coming out of our local university that will be of great help to us,” he stated.Dr. Ferguson, who was addressing a Paediatric Renal Conference and Workshop at the Couples San Souci Hotel in Ocho Rios this morning (October  6), also informed that six Cuban trained dental surgeons will be joining the health workforce. He said that in addition to the returning Jamaicans, there are “persons coming in under the agreement with Cuba, who are really to close the gap.  We are bringing in some pathologists because the turnaround time for specimens is much too long now.”He added that there is also a need to improve and modernize laboratory services “so that things can be done in a timely manner, even as there is a move to improve the human capital.”Dr. Ferguson said that the move to boost personnel fits in with the process to develop centres of excellence at the primary health care level.  He said that work is ongoing on four facilities, which are intended to be model institutions across the regional health authorities. The four centres of excellences will be located at the Issac Barrant Health Centre in St. Thomas; Santa Cruz Health Centre, St. Elizabeth; Claremont Health Centre, St. Ann; and Darliston Health Centre, Westmoreland. Cabinet Approves Drafting of Local Government Legislation

first_img The legislation will facilitate the modernisation of the local government system in Jamaica. The proposed Local Governance Act was created by consolidating several existing acts and will introduce several new concepts. Story Highlights Cabinet has approved the issuing of drafting instructions for the three strategic laws in the local government reform process. Cabinet has approved the issuing of drafting instructions for the three strategic laws in the local government reform process. These are: the Local Government Act, the Local Government and Financial Management Act, and the Local Government Unified Services and Employment Act.Minister of State in the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Colin Fagan, made the announcement as he addressed a Community Development Committees Conference held on Wednesday, November 13, in Savanna-La-Mar, Westmoreland. He said that the legislation will facilitate the modernisation of the local government system in Jamaica and enable local authorities to more effectively respond to the citizenry.“What this will do is allow for the local authorities to have more autonomy and be responsive to their citizens once these laws come into being. We still have some stages to go; drafting instructions will now be issued to the Chief Parliamentary Counsel and so they will have to look at all the laws, cross check to see which one interferes with which law and so on. It will take a little time,” Mr. Fagan said.He stated that the Government is serious about local government reform, and will be seeking to expedite the process by “engaging the services of some lawyers outside of what exists in government.”The State Minister said that the proposed Local Governance Act was created by consolidating several existing acts and will introduce several new concepts and tenets which “better reflect a modern approach to local governance and would strengthen local self-management, making local authorities autonomous and responsive to their citizenry”.“The primary focus is on issues of good governance, including accountability, transparency, inclusiveness and equity, local self-management, participation of civil society in the local governance process.  The Local Governance Act is an important piece of legislation that will certainly facilitate the bid to identify additional means of driving local economic development, which will, in turn make a significant contribution to national economic growth.  It will also allow for a certain level of independence … for local authority to tap into the communities’ powerful reservoir of energy and common sense for local economic development,” Mr. Fagan noted. He said that effective governance was the pathway to economic development, both at the local and national levels.“We pride ourselves on being a transparent government, a government for the people, by the people and as such, we will continue to forge ahead with plans/legislation that will see citizens getting more involved in the governance process,” he stated. The conference staged under the theme: ‘The governance framework: the pathway to local economic development,” was part of a series being carried out across the island as part of Local Government and Community Development Month. The events are organised by the Social Development Commission (SDC) and the National Association of Parish Development Committee (NAPDEC), through sponsorship from National Integrity Action (NIA).last_img read more
