Not pictured: chef Gale Kohl.Hillsides, a Southern California foster care and mental health charity, has launched a Culinary Apprenticeship Program to help youth gain the knowledge and skills needed to obtain employment in the culinary field. The program is a partnership between Hillsides Youth Moving On (YMO) program, which offers workforce development and other services to youth formerly in foster care, and Hillsides Innovation Department, which identifies and evaluates innovative strategies and solutions for the charity. The 10-week course will provide 12 young adults across Hillsides’ programs the opportunity to work with six local chefs. Each week will begin with a customer-service workshop from a local Starbucks store manager and end with the young adults working in the kitchen with one to two chefs to learn important kitchen skills and cook a different dish. The culinary experience will end with a final event where the chefs and young adults will prepare a five-course meal for 50 guests.“We are so excited to provide a supportive environment in which youth can receive culinary, job, and life skills training,” said Correnda Perkins, the division chief of Hillsides transitional-aged youth. “The experience will also provide the youth with the mentorship and support they need not only to gain hands-on food prep and cooking experience but to achieve their full potential in life.”The local chefs in the apprenticeship program are Charlie Negrete, former chef director of the culinary job training program at LA Kitchen, who has worked under Michelin starred chefs and 5 Star establishments such as the Peninsula Hotel, the Jonathan Club, and the Terranea Resort; Claud Beltran, co-owner and chef at Bacchus’ Kitchen in Pasadena and co-owner of Claud Beltran & Co Catering; Gale Kohl, a 20-year veteran of the food service industry and owner of Gale’s Restaurant in Pasadena; Doug Fore, who has opened 12 restaurants in his career and consulted for numerous organizations and restaurants such as Disney, Bon Appétit, and Stonefire Grill; Alexandra Poer, chef-owner of alexandra’s table with a 26-year culinary career; and Geoff Jennings, owner of Nomad Ice Pops. The chefs are donating their time and expertise to Hillsides because they feel it is important to mentor the next generation of chefs, especially considering some in the program have faced childhoods spent in foster care or other adversities. “Sharing my story, knowledge, and culinary journey with youth is important to me,” said chef Claud Beltran. Some of the participating youth have found food and cooking to be therapeutic in their lives. Ricky Porter, 23, used cooking as a way to bond with the 25 different foster families he lived with from the time he was two days old until he turned 21. “Growing up in foster care, I lived with families from many different cultures, and what brought every family together and made them smile was food,” he said.Ricky, who along the way mastered several recipes, from peanut butter cookies to breaded chicken to mocha-flavored cake frosting, one day hopes to open an organic vegan café. “In this apprenticeship program, I look forward to gaining knowledge, learning how a culinary business can be run, and to making lasting connections,” he said.Local Starbucks managers Christina Aguilar and James Valeriano have volunteered to provide the customer service workshop and will also lead a session on barista skills. Starbucks has a history of supporting Hillsides. In 2017 and 2018, The Starbucks Foundation awarded Hillsides a $30,000 grant for the YMO workforce development program. Local Starbucks partners also support the YMO workforce development program by leading a series of career workshops for youth, participating in YMO’s annual resource fair, and hiring youth at local Starbucks stores. In addition, for the last 10 years, Starbucks stores throughout the San Gabriel Valley have supported an annual holiday toy drive for Hillsides, raising thousands of dollars in gifts and toys for children in need. The youth chef training will run through August 19. The dining event will be held on August 25 at the First United Methodist Church Pasadena, 500 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena.Hillsides’ YMO program is one of Hillsides’ five core programs and offers a continuum of support services for transition-aged youth 16 – 25 that includes a Peer Resource drop-in center, housing services, and workforce development. Hillsides Innovation Department leads the effort to identify and evaluate innovative strategies, solutions, experimental designs, and practices to support Hillsides’ mission and impact with the communities it serves.About HillsidesHillsides is dedicated to healing children and young adults, strengthening families, and transforming communities through quality comprehensive services and advocacy. first_imgHysaj agent alerts Chelsea with fresh Napoli transfer warningby Carlos Volcano10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveThe agent of Elseid Hysaj won’t rule out leaving Napoli in January. The fullback was close to joining Chelsea last summer.”He could have gone with [Maurizio] Sarri to Chelsea, but Ancelotti blocked everything,” Mario Giuffredi fumed on Radio Marte.“He even publicly said recently that he was counting on him for this last period, but the facts say that in the last four games, Hysaj has only played one.“Therefore that probably means he’s not too important for the Coach. If Ancelotti no longer considers him a starter, and wants to remove the disturbance, we’ll do it.“Hysaj doesn’t deserve this bad treatment, considering how much he’s given Napoli in the last three years, and also because it’s professionally correct to be clear in life.“Maybe it’s just a transitional phase, but every Coach makes his choices and it’s right that’s the case. So if Hysaj has become fourth choice it’s only right they communicate that to us.“If this is a transitional phase we’ll soon see Hysaj as a starter again, or at the very least playing more consistently, but if Hysaj is no longer valued by the Coach we’ll ask for a transfer in January.” TagsTransfersAbout the authorCarlos VolcanoShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Government Seeking to Transform Jamaica into A Multilingual Country

first_img Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, said the programme is indicative of the Government taking meaningful action to advance the country’s global competitiveness, grow the economy and create meaningful jobs for the people. “In fact our National Development Plan, Vision 2030, highlights the Government’s focus on foreign language acquisition and instruction as a core feature of the ‘educated Jamaican’,” she said. The Government is seeking to transform Jamaica into a multilingual country through the recently concluded four-day intensive training programme for Spanish language practitioners.Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, said the programme is indicative of the Government taking meaningful action to advance the country’s global competitiveness, grow the economy and create meaningful jobs for the people.“In fact our National Development Plan, Vision 2030, highlights the Government’s focus on foreign language acquisition and instruction as a core feature of the ‘educated Jamaican’,” she said.Mrs. Johnson Smith was speaking at the closing ceremony of the programme, held at the Shortwood Teachers’ College, in St. Andrew, on August 21.It was organised by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, the Embassy of Spain in Jamaica and Shortwood Teachers’ College, in collaboration with Spain’s Cervantes Institute.A total of 100 current and prospective teachers of Spanish at the primary, secondary, vocational and tertiary levels were trained to be better able to impart the subject to students across the island.Mrs. Johnson Smith argued that having a multilingual society, “will open doors for a dynamic and pluralistic global market that would otherwise not be readily available”.“It also provides better potential for increased relations and strengthens people to people contact with many of our neighbouring countries (as) Jamaica is surrounded by Spanish-speaking countries. This will lead to a borderless hemisphere, which will open up markets and further opportunities,” she indicated. She expressed satisfaction at the number of teachers benefiting from the programme, which seeks to enhance their skills in teaching methodology, while also advancing their communicative competencies.Meanwhile, Principal of Shortwood Teachers’ College, Dr. Christopher Clarke, urged the teachers to demonstrate to their students their newly acquired competencies in the teaching, learning and delivery of the Spanish lesson.“You must go back and brighten every classroom you enter with the newly gained knowledge and sharpened skills. You need to make a difference because you have made a tremendous sacrifice by giving up four days,” he noted. In his remarks, Spain’s Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency, Josep Maria Bosch Bessa, said that the positive success of the course will help to build a stable collaboration between the Education, Youth and Information Ministry and the Cervantes Institute. He explained that the training will be a big step in Jamaica’s journey to achieving a more “bilingual society, (which will be equipped) with better trained teachers and better methods of teaching in schools”.“The future of an improvement in Spanish language learning needs teacher-commitment and vocation,” he said.Founded in 1991, the Cervantes Institute has over 65 centres where Spanish is taught. These are located all over the world and each year offers more than 5,000 courses in Spanish to small groups, imparted by fully qualified teachers, who use the most modern technologies and educational methods. The institute is also responsible for the dissemination of Spanish and Spanish-American culture. Story Highlights The Government is seeking to transform Jamaica into a multilingual country through the recently concluded four-day intensive training programme for Spanish language practitioners. last_img read more

Klopp pokes fun at Super League reports

first_imgLiverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has joked he would be in favour of European Super League because it would mean fewer games and more money. The German manager laughed off the notion of a European ‘Super League’ by joking it would be a boost for his team to play fewer games.Speaking after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal on Saturday, Klopp batted away the idea of the competition in his typically jovial style.“It sounds really nice because it sounds like much less games and much more money,” he said, according to FourFourTwo.Jadon Sancho, Borussia DortmundCrouch: Liverpool could beat Man United to Jadon Sancho Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Peter Crouch wouldn’t be surprised to see Jadon Sancho end up at Liverpool one day instead of his long-term pursuers Manchester United.“I am completely fine with how the league football is at the moment. At least, it’s an idea [the ‘Super League’] that we don’t do immediately.”Klopp also claimed football governing bodies, FIFA and UEFA’s approach to proposed competition revamps are flawed because they do not seek sufficient input from clubs and other stakeholders.“I’m not even sure if somebody spoke about it, to be honest. It looks like all the other wonderful ideas of FIFA and UEFA,” he added.“They do them immediately, they don’t ask. And then you see, ‘Oh, okay, we have 20 games more and not more money’.”last_img read more

However, Princess Cruises said all were Americans except for two passengers who had been missing and were from Canada and Australia.Coast Guard Lt. He said the plane’s tail and section of the fuselage were 900 feet (275 meters) from the aircraft’s floats, which landed near shore. The smaller plane was partially submerged in the shore of George Inlet after the single-engine plane overturned and hit some trees before crashing, according to Coast Guard Lt. Brian Dykens. The larger Otter landed in water and sank, he said. One passenger on the larger plane died, as did two passengers and the pilot on the smaller plane, Princess Cruises said in a release.Canadian officials said Tuesday that one of its citizens was among the dead. Four patients with broken bones were later transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, spokeswoman Susan Gregg said.Three survivors were released from PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center in Ketchikan on Tuesday.
