PPP questions mysterious deaths of 4 GGMC workers

first_img…claims deaths may be linked to mercury poisoningThe parliamentary Opposition has raised questions over the recent deaths of four Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) staffers; a matter that has seemingly been shrouded in an information blackout. In a statement issued on Friday, the party expressed condolences to the relatives of the deceased staffers, whose names were given as Dwayne De Jonge (ranger), Latchman Chiti (surveyor), Leroy Green (carpenter) and Clement Proffit (lab technician). According to the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), the issue is one that must be addressed urgently by the relevant authorities. The Party also raised possible links to the mercury poisoning that had afflicted workers at the GGMC during amalgam burning exercises. According to the PPP, all four men were documented to have been affected by mercury poisoning.Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman and junior Minister Simona Broomes“These four deaths, which follow each other in such a short period of time, should be a cause for serious concern. It is disturbing that the Government and the GGMC have been reluctant to inform the staff and public about actions taken to ensure protection of not only staffers, but also those in surrounding communities.”“This is not a political issue,” the Party continued. “The PPP will support the Government of Guyana to ensure that every effort is made to guarantee the health and safety of our people. We therefore urge immediate action by the relevant authorities, including management of the GGMC and the Ministry of Public Health, to ensure the occupational health and safety standards are in place.”The Guyana Gold BoardAccording to the Party, precautionary measures such as testing and treatment for all staff must be operationalised by the GGMC and the Public Health Ministry. The cost for this, the Party advised, should be borne by the GGMC.“The PPP also supports the sourcing of specialists to respond to this matter before it becomes a bigger health crisis,” the party added.Calls by this publication to Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman and his junior Minister Simona Broomes went unanswered. When contacted, a top-level official within the Ministry was also at a loss to provide information about the men. He could only confirm that the men were employed at the GGMC and indeed died but did not have any more information. When contacted, President of the Guyana Civil Servants and General Workers Union (GCS & GWU) Gregory Gaspar declined to comment on the issue. According to Gaspar, he could not confirm the deaths of the men.Sources have informed this publication, however, that the men died in close proximation with the last one as recent as a few days ago.Mercury exposureA few months ago, a number of GGMC staffers had walked off the job citing concerns over exposure to mercury. The decision resulted in the authorities trying to mediate around the issue.Following the discovery of high levels of mercury in its laboratory, which is in the GGMC compound, the Guyana Gold Board (GGB) had contracted the services of Trinidad-based Kaizen Environmental Services to conduct an independent investigation of the effect of the emission, and that company has said the mercury levels are back to normal.According to the report, the study was conducted on March 28, 2018, at 10 locations primarily located within the Guyana Geology and Mines Commissions’ compound and the surrounding areas.“The mercury (Hg) levels monitored at all 10 locations were within the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (US OSHA) eight-hour Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL),” the report stated.Out of over 130 staffers tested, it was discovered that more than 60 reported high levels of mercury in their system. Trotman, appearing before the National Assembly’s Natural Resources Committee, had subsequently revealed that the Gold Board had moved its gold burning operations to a private dealer.last_img read more

Health sector overhaul on track: report

first_img Also contained in the report was detailed progress on reducing new HIV infections, cutting the mother-to-child transmission rate from 3.5% in 2010 to less than 2%, increasing the total number of patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART) from 1.1-million in 2009 to 2.5-million, and improving the TB cure rate to 85%. Chabane said the government had seen the reduction of mother-to-child transmission from 8% in 2008 to 3.5% in 2011, protecting more than 30 000 babies from infection per year. In addition, 19.9-million people had undergone voluntary testing for HIV by 2011. “The number of people receiving treatment increased from 1.1-million in 2009 to 1.7-million in 2011,” he said. There has also been a stabilisation of HIV prevalence – the number of people living with HIV – after rising since the 1990s, which was indicated by antenatal surveys. The rate of new infections has decreased from 1.4% to 0.8% in the 15-24 age groups, with the trend looking set to continue in the coming years. Acceleration of campaigns Authorities say the turnaround could be attributed to an acceleration and expansion of HIV awareness and prevention campaigns, counselling and testing, treatment, care and support. “Since the presidential launch of the HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) Campaign in April 2010, the number of people tested has increased substantially, confirming improvements in health-seeking behaviour among South Africans,” Chabane said. “As at mid-2011, 15.1-million people had been tested and an additional 4.8-million people have since been tested.” 5 June 2012 Progress on establishing South Africa’s National Health Insurance scheme to improve the effectiveness of the country’s health system is well under way, according to a government mid-term review report released in Pretoria last week. The report, released by Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Collins Chabane in Pretoria on Friday, reviews the progress made by the current administration at the November 2011 mid-point of its 2009-14 electoral term. “The Department of Health conducted an audit of service quality in over 75% of health facilities and improvement plans are now being developed,” Chabane said, adding that a green paper had been produced and released for public input on the matter. He said the department had also developed a human resource strategy that linked intake of health professionals to projected demand. An audit of 122 nursing colleges was also in progress. However, the report acknowledged that despite radical interventions since 1994, the country’s health sector remained poor compared to other countries with a similar profile as South Africa. South Africa has high levels of maternal and child mortality, with life expectancy declining significantly from 1994 to 2009; officials said this was an indication of a “reversal” of earlier gains made towards meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals. Long-term plans The Department of Health has committed to a strategy to change the situation. The plan will include: The number of public facilities initiating patients on ARV drugs also increased from 490 in 2010 to 2 948 in 2011 and the number of nurses trained to provide treatment increased from 290 in 2010 to 10 000 in 2011. In future, the initiation of antiretroviral (ARV) treatment at a CD4 count of less than 350 should result in increased numbers of people on treatment and reduced deaths. Through improving procurement processes, the Health Department managed to achieve a 50% decrease in the prices of ARV drugs, which will enable the health sector to treat more patients with the same amount of resources. Improvements were also made in TB control and management, with more than eight million people screened during the HCT Campaign. Of these, one million were referred for further diagnosis and management at relevant health facilities. The number of people who default on their TB treatment declined from 7.9% in 2009 to 6.5% in 2010 and, for the first time, the national TB cure rate reached the 70% mark in 2010. Despite these significant strides, the report noted that much work is required to achieve the 85% cure rate recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The department has improved the early diagnosis and detection of resistance to TB treatment, which should reduce the risk of spreading TB. Show Me Your Decisions and I’ll Show You Your Ultimate Results

first_imgIf you show me your decisions, I’ll show you your ultimate results. Your day-to-day choices project the results you will invariably produce in the future.Small Decisions, Big OutcomesEvery decision offers you a choice between something that moves you closer to your goals or one of the many things that move you further away from what you profess to want. It is rarely a lack of knowledge that prevents one from succeeding. Everything you need to know is already known, and if it is not known to you, it is easily acquired. What prevents people from obtaining what they want is determined by the discipline to make the right decision when faced with choices. It’s all the rage to have a morning routine. There is value in starting your day with powerful rituals. All the advice you would ever need to start your day with intention is known. You can choose to wake up early without hitting the snooze button, meditate or pray or center yourself in some other way, rehydrate your body, and do some form of exercise for some reasonable amount of time. Some people start their day off in just such a fashion as I described here. More people hit the snooze button, wake up late, take no time for themselves, and drive directly to an office to begin working. They do so without taking care of the single asset through which they will produce all their results. You are free to choose for yourself what you do, but you are not free from the consequences.Everything Is Already KnownThere are no secrets to losing weight and becoming more fit. There are so many conflicting ideas that it might be confusing to some, but it’s not likely. If you end your love affair with sugar and chocolate, drop all white starchy foods, reduce your caloric intake, and walk for 30 to 45 minutes daily, you will lose weight. Those decisions are what lead to the ultimate result of more excellent health, greater fitness, greater clarity, and all-around improved well-being.No one struggles to improve their fitness because they are unsure of what to do. They struggle because of the choices they routinely make. Why You Don’t Have DealsCertain things need to be done to create opportunities when you work in sales. It is imperative that you call prospective clients to ask them for meetings. You also have to call back and professionally persist over a longer time than most are willing to endure. The amount of time and energy you exert in making calls and scheduling those meetings provides evidence of what your ultimate result will look like in the future. The decision to prospect means avoiding lesser choices when it comes to your time. You will close no deals you don’t first open.Show me the prospecting blocks on your calendar, and I’ll show you your pipeline.Who Matters MostIf you want better, stronger, more intimate relationships with the people you care about, the decision to spend time with them (and without your iPhone) will create those outcomes. That requires a decision to give the human beings you care about your full and undivided attention, something they may not be used to. If they haven’t experienced that gift for some time, it may cause them to ask about your overall health and wellness. The poor choice you might make is to have your body in one place with the better part of you somewhere far away.Your Future SecurityIt’s not difficult to acquire greater wealth. The decision to do so, however, causes people no end of problems. There is no modern banking offering that does not allow you to automatically transfer money from your checking account to a savings account and an investment account. The best way to accumulate wealth is to invest for the long term, never touching the money you set aside. The decision to set the money aside and leave it alone is difficult when your choice is a new iPhone or the red sports car you’ve had your eye on for a very long time.Small Choices, Large ImplicationsSome of the smallest decisions end up having the most significant impact on your results. If you want to improve your results, the decision to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day will not only change how you feel, the discipline itself will provide the foundation for greater productivity. The decision to prospect for the first ninety minutes of every day will pay dividends beyond anything you might accomplish by sporadically making a few calls.Instead of deciding to do this or that, you must to let Future You determine what you do. If you choose small things over bigger things, your life will be small. If you make decisions to do what you should do instead of what you want to do, you’ll have a different outcome. Both outcomes, good or bad, are inevitable. If you show me your decisions, I’ll show you your ultimate results. What is it that you want? Essential Reading! I suspect he could be.”I see a centre back in the 20-year-old and that is where his future could lie for club and country, rather than being used solely in midfield.”In the modern game, players are being told to pass it out from the back, and Rice is capable of executing that.”He’d be more than happy to get on the ball and has the intelligence needed to form an effective centre back partnership.”Watch West Ham and you’ll see this young man is excellent at what he does. In the Premier League this season, only two midfielders have made more tackles than Rice.”He also ranks fourth for interceptions and seventh for ball recoveries. Bureau of Gender Affairs to Stage Events for International Men’s Day

The Bureau of Gender Affairs (BGA) and several men’s groups will be hosting events to mark International Men’s Day (IMD), which will be observed on November 17.Plans for IMD activities this year were discussed at a recent men’s group meeting, held at the BGA’s office, 5-9 South Odeon Avenue, Kingston 10.Research Officer at the BGA, Nashan Miller, told JIS News that the BGA will be partnering with several groups to host community-based initiatives, including skills training workshops, with emphasis on men.He said the plan is to involve more men and unattached youth from vulnerable communities.“This year, we are looking for something bigger to highlight men’s contributions and also to celebrate them,” he addedMr. Miller said the BGA is also willing to work with community groups with new initiatives involving men and boys.“We see it fit to partner with them. If we can’t, we will refer them to other agencies,” he said, adding that having multiple partners will assist the Bureau in achieving its mandate.“It is critical that we work with these groups to see what is happening in their area and to see how we can improve the lives of our boys and men. We are at a stage where we find that both boys and men are being left behind,” he said.Mr. Miller explained that the Bureau’s mandate is to promote gender equality in Jamaica, and that the renaming of the Bureau of Women’s Affairs to the Bureau of Gender Affairs on March 8, 2016 by the Government was an indication that “issues concerning men and boys cannot be overlooked”.The Research Officer said the National Policy on Gender Equality speaks to having a society where both men and women are equal, where they both work together in tandem to promote a productive society.“So, discussions on gender equality cannot be put forward without the contribution of men,” he added. The meeting, held under the theme ‘Promoting Positive Masculinity: The Changing Role of Men in the Jamaican Society’, is part of the Bureau’s effort to forge partnerships with men’s groups towards gender mainstreaming and to agree on solutions and strategies to promote positive masculinity.Representatives from 21 groups, including the Men of God Against Violence & Abuse (MoGAVA), Yard Empire, National Youth Council and the Social Development Commission (SDC), attended the meeting.Last year, the BGA, an agency of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, partnered with MoGAVA, AIDS Healthcare Foundation and other key stakeholders to host IMD activities in the Majesty Gardens community in St Andrew.last_img read more

Port of Thessaloniki Gaining Ground after Privatization

first_imgGreek Port of Thessaloniki is going through some major changes on the back of its privatization in December 2017, when the Government of Greece sold a 67 percent share in the port. The stake was sold for EUR 231.9 million, however, the total value of the deal was EUR 1.1 billion. The concession agreement signed between the Greek State and ThPA SA, included obligatory investments amounting to EUR 180 million to be accomplished in the next seven years.Sotiris Theofanis, Chairman of the BoD and CEO of ThPA SA, revealed the details and progress of the investments in an interview with World Maritime News.Sotiris Theofanis, Chairman of the BoD and CEO of ThPA SAHe said that the obligatory investment program includes the extension of the port’s container terminal by 440 meters with a depth of 16.5 meters, the procurement of new equipment for container and dry bulk terminals, and general port development, including the rehabilitation of the old customs building.“Provided that the maturity period will be shortened, we are determined to complete the Pier 6 Extension Project, being the backbone of our investment plan, in approximately 4.5 years, effectively much earlier than our contractual obligation.”Theofanis explained that the extension of Pier 6 by 440 meters would provide berthing capacity to accommodate Neopanamax vessels with carrying capacity ranging between 10,000 and 14,000 TEUs.“The important thing is that we will be able to serve main liner services that will come directly from East Asia to the Port of Thessaloniki,” he added.Pier 6 extension to be completed in 4.5 yearsFor the time being, Theofanis said that the management team’s main priorities would be to restore the port’s level of service, procure state-of-the-art handling equipment, reorganize the company, and establish a customer-oriented business approach. The first tenders for the procurement of modern cargo handling equipment are underway, according to Theofanis, while the efforts to improve the port’s operation have shown their first results.Speaking on one of the port’s major issues, namely, long waiting times for ships, the CEO of ThPA said that “since the first day we took over the management of the port, we focused on reducing waiting time for ships at anchor for container terminal and conventional terminal as well.”The port managed to reduce the waiting time from 28 hours in the first quarter of 2018, into 14 hours and 50 minutes in April 2018 and 12 hours and 10 minutes in May. Furthermore, ThPA decided this year to invest an additional amount of almost EUR 28 million to replace some of the old, obsolete equipment in order to improve the level of service provided to their clients, as a first step towards a massive port investment plan.During the first five months of 2018, container traffic at the port showed an increase of 10% in TEUs compared to the same period in 2017, providing optimism for the future prospects. Based on this increase, it is estimated that the annual container throughput will reach 430,000 – 435,000 TEUs.The port’s container terminal of great importance“ThPA SA has high growth potential, that should be properly exploited. The new management team established last March, with a strong sense of responsibility is willing to work with vision, plan and commitment for the company’s growth and to respond to the trust bestowed on us by the shareholders and the economic community of Northern Greece as well.”All of the port’s segments, including containers and conventional cargo handling, passenger traffic, cruise and coastal shipping, have high growth potential. However, Theofanis explained that ThPA attached great importance to the container terminal as the planned investments are expected to “provide a strong momentum for the development of the port.”Theofanis concluded that the aim is to transform the Port of Thessaloniki into a modern port complex, bringing multiple benefits for the company, the city and Northern Greece, as well as expanding substantially its hinterland in South East Europe.World Maritime News Stafflast_img read more

Derrick Rose Out For Season as Bulls Beat Sixers

For Chicago Bulls fans, it was the best of times and the worst of times after the Bulls opened the first round of the NBA playoffs with a 103-91 victory, only to lose superstar point guard Derrick Rose to a season ending knee injury in the 4th quarter.Rose, who has nursed countless injuries during this shortened season, missed 27 of the Bulls 66 games during the year. The league’s reigning Most Valuable Player looked as if he had returned to form, putting together an impressive statline of 23 points, 9 assists, and 9 rebounds before the scary injury. With the Bulls up 12, Rose attacked the rim and attempted to execute a hop step before firing up on of his patented floaters. Unfortunately for Rose—and Bulls fans across the country—the hop step will be the last move he makes on a court this season.Rose reached for his knee immediately, telling teammates that he heard his knee “pop.” Rose was rushed to a nearby hospital where he received a MRI, which brought news of his torn ACL.Once the swelling goes down Rose will undergo surgery to repair the ligament and begin the rehab process. Although the Bulls managed to hold off the Sixers, the team seemed distraught after the game.Forward Kyle Korver, whose facial expression looked straight out of a horror movie when the injury happened, told local reporters this was the “saddest win ever.”“We have to pick ourselves up,” he said. “We’ve played a lot of games this year without him. Maybe that was getting us ready for this.”Many people immediately questioned why Rose was even in the game with the Bulls up 12 and little time remaining. But even after the injury to his star player, head coach Tom Thibodeau refused to second-guess himself.“I don’t work backwards like you (reporters) do,” he said. “The score was going the other way. He has to play. He has to work on closing. Our team didn’t handle that part great. That’s what I was thinking.” read more

No rest for weary Buckeyes coaches

BOSTON – There was no point in asking members of the Ohio State men’s basketball team’s coaching staff what time they thought they would finishing watching tape Friday morning – they didn’t know. You can bet it was late, though. The OSU staff has now guided the No. 2-seeded Buckeyes (30-7) to an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament after the team’s 81-66 win against No. 6-seeded Cincinnati Thursday at TD Garden in Boston, but they aren’t done yet. Two OSU coaches said they will spare no effort in helping prepare their team for Saturday’s East Region final against top-seeded Syracuse (34-2), even if means losing a few more hours of sleep. First-year OSU video coordinator and former Duke guard Greg Paulus said he and other coaches would continue preparation for Saturday’s game in the wee hours of Friday morning where they will begin film study. “We’ll watch some film (this morning), you know, whether that’s breaking down this game (against Cincinnati) or watching some Syracuse,” Paulus said. “You just watch them and try to get familiar with them.” Paulus said he didn’t know what time the coaches would take a break for some sleep on Friday, but said they wouldn’t stop until they feel like they understand their opponent. “Whatever it takes,” Paulus said. OSU assistant coach Jeff Boals said that the short turnaround for postseason games is the main contributor to late nights put in by coaches all over the country. “With a one-day prep … you have so much film on them, and you try to prepare as good of a game plan in a 48 hour timespan – not even – and give your guys the best opportunity to win the game,” Boals said. “At this point in the season, you know, you don’t sleep, and that’s across the country. It’s one of those deals where, with the team and the lack of preparation time, you want to do as much as you can in a short time.” Paulus agreed, adding that being one win away from the Final Four in New Orleans doesn’t make coaches more motivated because they always prepare at a high level. “The effort this staff put forward is always at the highest level,” he said. “If it takes five minutes, which, somehow it never does, you know, that’s great. Other times, it takes a little longer, and this time of year, you want to make sure that you dot your ‘I’s’ and cross your ‘T’s.’” OSU’s East Region final against Syracuse tips Saturday at TD Garden in Boston at 7:05 p.m. read more

Klopp pokes fun at Super League reports
