Tablet Developers: Build Productive Apps, Not Games

first_imgdan rowinski Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement Developers have a distinct incentive to build apps for tablets before smartphones. People use their tablets for longer periods of time and tablet apps are easier to monetize than their smartphone counterparts. And, believe it or not, there is a clear area in the app ecosystem for tablets that is being underserved by developers.Tablets hold an outsized influence in the gadget economy. There are many more PCs and laptops in the world than tablets (for now). More than a billion people own a smartphones and adoption is proliferating at an exponential rate. In the second quarter of 2013, tablet shipments across the globe were 45.1 million, according to research firm IDC. That is about 19% of the 236.4 million total smartphones shipped in that same period.Yet tablets see nearly 25% of all mobile usage, according to new stats from analytics firm Mixpanel. People use their tablets for longer periods of time than their smartphones, playing games, reading and using social networks.  Tags:#Android#app developers#iOS#microsoft surface#tablet What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … If you have built a tablet app that people actually use, there is a good chance it is a game. According to Mixpanel’s latest report, 44% of all tablet usage was for gaming. The next four usage categories (social, education, e-commerce and media) account for a combined 27% of all tablet usage. The remaining 29% is divided between categories like travel, enterprise, music, messaging, photography and health. “The biggest clear difference between a tablet and a phone is screen size and I think the best apps will find a way to monetize better on the tablet,” said Mixpanel CEO Suhail Doshi. “More importantly, because you have more real estate you can push the boundaries of design as you are not as restricted as you are with the small screen of a phone.”The easy trap for developers to fall in is to say, “people use games, games make more money, let’s build more games!” Because, you know, when everybody else is doing it, you should be doing it, too. Right? Not exactly. One of the reasons games do better on tablets (and on smartphones) as a category is because both the Apple App Store and Android’s Google Play have tons and tons of games in their respective repositories. Some of those games (like Infinity Blade or Temple Run) are awesome. Some are soul-depleting time suckers (Candy Crush). It truly is the golden age for mobile game developers.Which is exactly why developers should look for the underserved categories of tablet apps. Tablets are custom made to be media consumption devices, for instance. Companies like Flipboard, Zite and Netflix serve this area very well. The New York Times and Washington Post both have fairly new updates to their tablet apps for iOS and Android. But tablets also have great potential for the workers of the world. Mixpanel’s data shows that enterprise-based apps beat only music, messaging, photo & video and dating apps in usage on its network. Health-related apps came in sixth, ahead of travel and enterprise. If you’ve ever used WebMD’s awesome iPad app, you might wonder why health apps for doctors and patients aren’t more of a priority for developers (outside of the draconian but necessary laws about transferring patient data on computers). Doshi says that enterprise-grade apps like Salesforce are just not meant for smartphones. But tablets? Yeah, that would work much better.center_img Related Posts Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces “There is no way you can really use Salesforce on an iPhone. No way. Salesforce could never build an app for a smartphone that would be sufficient for a person in the real world to use,” Doshi said. “One of the biggest aspects of Salesforce is the reporting. Building complex reports on your phone is basically not possible because there is just not enough space to build all the UI components to build a difficult report.”Mixpanel presents its data as “here are what people are doing, so this is what your opportunity is.” That may be the wrong way to look at it. Media, health, travel, enterprise and music are all market inefficiencies in the tablet app ecosystem. What do developers and entrepreneurs love to do? Correct inefficiency! That makes these app categories opportunities, not areas to be avoided. That goes double for Android tablets. According to Mixpanel, games account for 68% of overall usage for Android tablets. That’s a monopoly ripe for disruption by aspiring entrepreneurs that want to build great tablet experiences for enterprise, education and media on Android. The bottom line? The masses (and the data) will tell you to build a game for iOS. That is the way that everybody is zigging. So why not zag and build where no one else is building, where there are still consumers that need those types of apps?“I think the apps that will start to succeed on tablets are the ones that give you more creative freedom to build something. If you look at Photoshop, for example, you couldn’t ever really build Photoshop on your phone. It would just be too complex to do,” Doshi said. “But, you could do it on a tablet because there are more areas that you can build with, more options that you can mess with. I think you could build a more powerful app. I think that is where there where some of these guys in the middle ground can succeed.” The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technologylast_img read more

Can smart cities protect their IoT Achilles heel from hackers?

first_imgLast year’s headline-grabbing security breaches of Internet of Things (IoT) technology was the opening salvo in a new cyberwar where smart cities are firmly in the crosshairs.Smart city security vulnerabilities were a recent topic of discussion with Paul Williams, SADC Country Manager with cyber security software firm Fortinet.Williams says that 2016’s high profile IoT cyber-attacks exposed how vulnerable this new technology is to hackers.“As was seen recently in a series of IoT-based denial of service attacks, IoT devices can be compromised and hijacked into a Shadownet and controlled by a command and control center run by hackers,” he says. “Alternatively, these devices and services may be attacked in order to deny services to legitimate users.”And considering that global smart city strategies hinge on connecting massive numbers of IoT devices and sensors, this boosts the attack surfaces targeted by smart city hackers.“The increase in the size of a smart city’s IoT device footprint corresponds to an increase in the size of its attack surface,” he warns. In light of how quickly IoT technology is being integrated into vital systems of smart cities, considerable damage can be done by malicious hackers. Some examples of possible smart city attacks could include: disrupting traffic by hijacking traffic lights or misdirecting vehicles; causing sewage system floods or disrupted access to drinking water; or remotely operating alarm systems and temperature control systems. But rather than hitting the panic button, Williams recommends smart cities begin a systematic approach to tackling their IoT security threats.“While it’s not possible to secure every possible security breach in a totally connected environment… it’s possible to take some key initial steps to strengthen the smart city’s security posture and architecture,” he says.Using strong encryptionAmong these initial steps would be the usual advice of using strong encryption, designing tamper-resistant systems and implementing strong system access control.Beyond these steps he says that complex smart city networks need to implement segmentation to boost security. He suggests, for example, that smart transportation networks be logically segmented from other networks like user services or energy networks.“This aids in isolating an attacks, and allows for the advanced detection of data and threats as attacks and malware move from one network zone to the other,” says Williams. “This also divides the smart city network into security zones, which aids in compliance, monitoring internal traffic and devices, and preventing unauthorized access to restricted data and resources.”He also recommends that smart cities develop specific mitigation strategies to counter distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. These strategies could include overprovisioning the city’s bandwidth to withstand the overwhelming nature of DDoS attacks.“This may be comprised of either an over provisioned appliance solution, or a hybrid solution consisting of appliances combined with a cloud based scrubbing center,” he says. I suspect he could be.”I see a centre back in the 20-year-old and that is where his future could lie for club and country, rather than being used solely in midfield.”In the modern game, players are being told to pass it out from the back, and Rice is capable of executing that.”He’d be more than happy to get on the ball and has the intelligence needed to form an effective centre back partnership.”Watch West Ham and you’ll see this young man is excellent at what he does. In the Premier League this season, only two midfielders have made more tackles than Rice.”He also ranks fourth for interceptions and seventh for ball recoveries. I believe he could apply those talents to central defence, too, while being the proficient passer Gareth Southgate wants.” last_img read more

201516 NBA Preview The NewLook Spurs Are Gonna Be Really Good

And here’s what CARMELO thinks of San Antonio’s key players: Last season seemed like Kawhi Leonard’s coming-out party, but with Aldridge now in the mix, Leonard could see fewer double teams, which in turn could lead to even better production than CARMELO expects. The San Antonio Spurs, hoping to make another title run, loaded up on talent in the offseason. They landed coveted free agent LaMarcus Aldridge along with David West. They brought back Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, and signed Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green to new deals. The new players are expected to assimilate quickly with the Spurs veterans, but that’s not guaranteed, which is why coach Gregg Popovich admits that developing team chemistry is his most pressing concern. “It’s always going to be talked about throughout the league by everyone because that’s probably the biggest key of winning,” Green said. “You can have all the right pieces. But if you don’t have chemistry, you’re probably not going to be successful. So regardless of what your roster is, chemistry is the most important thing in this league, in this game. You hear it all the time. We may get tired of it. But it’s really important. We know how important it is.”FiveThirtyEight’s CARMELO projection system expects the Spurs to go 56-26 in 2015-16: Tony Parker changed up his fitness routine in an attempt to stay healthy, but Parker hasn’t played in more than 70 games in any of the last three seasons. In other words, the 33-year-old’s health may be an issue, and CARMELO clearly thinks Parker is in the twilight of his career. He needs to shoot much better than 32.3 percent from the field, which is what he produced over the summer in the EuroBasket tournament, for the Spurs to have a legitimate chance. Tim Duncan is 39, but Old Man Riverwalk will benefit tremendously from the addition of Aldridge. Duncan remains a factor on the pick-and-roll, and despite losing some athleticism, he anticipates well enough on defense to almost always be in position to help. (Also, if you were judging Duncan only by the company he keeps, check out his top four comps!) His skills are declining, but Manu Ginobili remains important to the Spurs because of his ability to run the second group on offense, which, according to some players, has shown better chemistry thus far in camp than the starters. Long jumpers and turnarounds in the post diminish LaMarcus Aldridge’s true shooting percentage, and he’ll need to make quicker decisions with the ball in San Antonio than he did in Portland. David West is one of the NBA’s most accurate mid-range shooters, but his presence in San Antonio’s locker room will be just as important as his contributions on the court. Danny Green, a premier 3-and-D wing, seems to be in the perfect situation for his game to flourish. Just don’t let him put the ball on the floor. We’re inaugurating our NBA player projection system, CARMELO, with 2015-16 season previews for every team in the league. Check out the teams we’ve already previewed here. No rest for weary Buckeyes coaches

BOSTON – There was no point in asking members of the Ohio State men’s basketball team’s coaching staff what time they thought they would finishing watching tape Friday morning – they didn’t know. You can bet it was late, though. The OSU staff has now guided the No. 2-seeded Buckeyes (30-7) to an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament after the team’s 81-66 win against No. 6-seeded Cincinnati Thursday at TD Garden in Boston, but they aren’t done yet. Two OSU coaches said they will spare no effort in helping prepare their team for Saturday’s East Region final against top-seeded Syracuse (34-2), even if means losing a few more hours of sleep. First-year OSU video coordinator and former Duke guard Greg Paulus said he and other coaches would continue preparation for Saturday’s game in the wee hours of Friday morning where they will begin film study. “We’ll watch some film (this morning), you know, whether that’s breaking down this game (against Cincinnati) or watching some Syracuse,” Paulus said. “You just watch them and try to get familiar with them.” Paulus said he didn’t know what time the coaches would take a break for some sleep on Friday, but said they wouldn’t stop until they feel like they understand their opponent. “Whatever it takes,” Paulus said. OSU assistant coach Jeff Boals said that the short turnaround for postseason games is the main contributor to late nights put in by coaches all over the country. “With a one-day prep … you have so much film on them, and you try to prepare as good of a game plan in a 48 hour timespan – not even – and give your guys the best opportunity to win the game,” Boals said. “At this point in the season, you know, you don’t sleep, and that’s across the country. It’s one of those deals where, with the team and the lack of preparation time, you want to do as much as you can in a short time.” Paulus agreed, adding that being one win away from the Final Four in New Orleans doesn’t make coaches more motivated because they always prepare at a high level. “The effort this staff put forward is always at the highest level,” he said. “If it takes five minutes, which, somehow it never does, you know, that’s great. Other times, it takes a little longer, and this time of year, you want to make sure that you dot your ‘I’s’ and cross your ‘T’s.’” OSU’s East Region final against Syracuse tips Saturday at TD Garden in Boston at 7:05 p.m. read more

Real Madrid stopped negotiations for Palacios

first_imgExequiel Palacios’ agent has revealed that Real Madrid has stopped all negotiations for the River Plate star due to the Libertadores final. The effects of the Copa Libertadores final in Madrid are starting to take some victims, the latest one is Exequiel Palacios from River Plate according to his agent. The player had an advanced negotiation to sign for Los Blancos during the winter, but the whole situation with the final has delayed and maybe even completely stopped the process, agent Renato Corsi spoke to Diario AS about the state of the whole deal and revealed that there are other clubs who are interested in signing the player as soon as possible.Corsi spoke about the heartbreak that was not being able to play the final at the Monumental for Palacios, the player who gave his club the ticket to the big match after scoring a penalty in the semifinals.Según @diarioas , la interminable final de la Libertadores frena el pase de Exequiel Palacios a Real Madrid, pero no lo pone en riesgohttps://t.co/sC0DdCRpQN— Claudio Mauri (@hcmauri) November 26, 2018“As the River Plate fan and as a football player for this club for the last ten years, it’s obvious that Exequiel wanted to play the final at the Monumental in Argentina,” said Corsi to Diario AS.“With this whole problem that took place over there, he would also love to play in that stadium and in a country as beautiful as Spain.”“I really hope things work out and he can play for Real Madrid. We have received calls from Inter, AS Roma, Wolfsburg…”“There are many interested clubs but Real Madrid is the one that has shown the biggest interest.”“This whole situation of the suspended final between River and Boca, is the reason that both boards of directors haven’t been able to talk about the transfer yet.”“But I gotta say that Real Madrid has been nothing but straightforward and polite with us, both me and my partner.”“Both clubs have already agreed that they will speak again when the final has passed, they were already going to keep having meetings over Exequiel Palacios after both matches.”“But everything happened and they didn’t talk. Real Madrid will call us in the next few days. We also spoke with Barcelona, but we never reached an agreement.”Jose Mourinho, Lionel MessiMourinho: “Lionel Messi made me a better coach” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho believes the experience of going up against Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi at Real Madrid made him a greater coach.“Zanetti from Inter also called me, but none of those clubs advanced as much as Real Madrid,” he added.⚪🔴⚪💪 pic.twitter.com/JzkHmLPIuu— Exequiel Palacios (@exepalacios_) November 20, 2018“Exequiel actually had a chance to join Torino about one and a half years ago. The problem with this offer he got, is that we didn’t think he was yet ready to go to Europe and we all decided that staying in River was the better idea,” he continued.“After that, he continued playing for the club and Marcelo (Gallardo) helped him keep growing little by little until he achieved this level of performance.”“Thanks to his efforts and the manager’s support, Exequiel grew to become the player he is today. We have worked with him for five years now, he is a very humble lad, just like his family. He always played the way he does right now.”“It’s evident that he started playing with a little more attitude this year thanks to Marcelo Gallardo, the manager helped him grow and even improve several aspects of his football,” he concluded.Exequiel Palacios will have a unique chance of showing Real Madrid and Spain what he is capable of, when he plays the Copa Libertadores final against Boca Juniors at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday. As an offensive midfielder with extraordinary creative capabilities, it is expected that Palacios can become one of Argentina’s biggest export talents in recent times.Real Madrid will have bought a great talent if the meetings between then and River Plate turn out positive, the reports of his transfer to Spain are all true, only they got a little bit behind for the reasons that his agent just explained.Vamos todos juntos banda ⚪🔴⚪!! pic.twitter.com/6TOSAWFJhf— Exequiel Palacios (@exepalacios_) October 31, 2018Where would you play Exequiel Palacios in the Real Madrid lineup?
