Gakuen Handsome is ugly as sin on purpose

first_img“Oh, yay! Another boys’ love (BL) game! I can’t wait to get started and look at all the pretty guys– Wait. What the hell is this.”Gakuen Handsome takes the pretty boy trope and turns it on its sparkly head by creating a hilarious BL parody game with god awful character designs and ugly as sin illustrations.Poking fun at the BL genre, this game has amassed a huge fan base in Japan. To satiate the rabid fans, an OVA was released based on the game on August 28th of last year. But wait! There’s more! Tohoku Penet, the studio behind the hilarious game, launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund a full anime season that reached its goal within 5 days. This goes to prove that the Japanese fans love these terrifyingly drawn dweebs, and you know what? So should we.Here’s a primer on the weird game so you can enjoy the fall anime season in its full, absurd glory. In the game, you are the unnamed male protagonist who transfers to the elite all-boys Baramon High School and is thrown into completely predictable and absurd situations where you will have to make friends, find love, and overcome challenges with the other male students. The twist on this game isn’t just the hideous art style, which is totally done on purpose. They take every trope usually found in these sort of situations and push it to the limits of ridiculousness.Take the “handsome” teacher Teruhiko Seionji, who loves to freely strip so art students can draw him, and forces you to dance the samba with him all night in the school halls.Or what about the beautiful chin of Sayaka Mitsurugi, who gets a little too close to you in the locker rooms and stabs you in the chest with his, err, beauty. The narcissistic character even has his own “image” song called, “Legend of Sexy.”The game’s endings with your potential love interests all end in drama and marriage. Imagine spending the rest of your life with these faces. Yikes. The art style purposely dishevels the characters into various deformed versions, looking like some terrible fan art that someone made when they were an 8-year-old posting on DeviantArt.We’re morbidly excited for the Gakuen Handsome anime, coming out the first week in October. Keep your eyes peeled. Ironically, the tagline of the game states, “Whenever you exited the school gates, you were handsome.” Not for these poor schmucks.last_img read more
