Eye on Io

first_imgJupiter’s volcanic moon Io continues to erupt, its heat flowing into science journals.  Planetary scientists are mapping its surface and devising new ideas about what drives its activity.    A paper in Icarus presented a new global geologic map of Io’s surface.1  The most common feature is plains (65.8%), followed by lava flow fields (28.5%, about a third of which are currently active), with a few mountains (3.2%) and patera floors (volcanic depressions, 2.5%).  These paterae account for 64% of Io’s hot spots.  The mountains and volcanoes appear evenly distributed by longitude, whereas there is a slight dropoff of lava flows in the polar regions.  This was the first complete map of Io from Galileo data at 1:15M scale (1 km per pixel).  Detailed surface mapping is essential for contemplating Io’s interior.    This little moon, about the size of Earth’s moon, is the most volcanically active body in the solar system (12/03/2007, 05/04/2004).  What makes it pop, with dozens of volcanoes active at a time, spewing out 100 times more lava than all Earth’s volcanoes combined?  A new theory by Krishan Khurana [UCLA] and a team from UCLA, UC Santa Cruz and University of Michigan at Ann Arbor is that Io has a global subsurface ocean of magma.  Space.com and PhysOrg featured the theory published in Science.2    The team inferred the presence of a global conducting layer based on magnetometer data from the Galileo mission.  They estimate that 20-30 miles below the crust, a layer of molten rock 30 miles deep produces the magnetic signature.  They did not address, however, questions about how the molten material erupts onto the surface without plate tectonics, or why heavy elements seen in the ultramafic lavas remain near the surface rather than having dropped deep into the interior billions of years ago.1.  Williams et al, “Volcanism on Io: New Insights from Global Geologic Mapping,” Icarus paper available online 05/13/2011, doi:10.1016/j.icarus.2011.05.007.2.  Khurana et al, “Evidence of a Global Magma Ocean in Io’s Interior,” Science Express, published online 12 May 2011.Stranger than Io’s volcanoes and the geysers of Enceladus is a phenomenon under the skulls of planetary scientists, where an unseen layer of liquid thought, worrying about how such activity could persist for billions of years, never seems to rise to the surface.(Visited 9 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

South Africa reassures investors

first_img4 September 2012 The recent violence at the mining town of Marikana is not a reflection of the business environment in South Africa, says the inter-ministerial committee established to deal with tragedy. Thirty-four people were killed in clashes with the police at Marikana near Rustenburg in South Africa’s North West province on 16 August. Prior to this, 10 other people – including two police officers – were killed in nearly a week of fighting between rival worker factions. “We would like to reassure all stakeholders and the international community that mining operations continue unhindered in other parts of the North West province and throughout the country,” the committee said in a statement on Monday. The government remained in control of the situation and law and order continued to prevail, it said. “The country continues to fully support direct investment, and appropriate incentives and the legislative framework are in place to give confidence and predictability to investment decisions and security of tenure.” The committee said the Marikana tragedy had not affected South Africa’s ability to attract investors. “As government, we are doing all in our power to make sure what happened does not happen again. “We would like to emphasise the inextricability of stability of investment and the seamless implementation of the Mining Charter with particular regard to social and labour programmes.” The committee said more work still needed to be done in the area of social investment in the country’s mining communities and in improving the living conditions of mineworkers to mitigate the unfavourable material conditions that gave rise to tragedies such as Marikana. Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant, who has been tasked with dealing with the Marikana labour dispute, has been meeting with the different labour unions active at the mine. She has also met with platinum and gold producers, the National Union of Mine Workers and the Chamber of Mines in an effort to find solutions to the instability. Following the Marikana tragedy, President Jacob Zuma instituted a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the events and circumstances leading up to the outbreak of violence at Marikana. The commission has been given four months to complete its work and report back to Zuma. Source: SANews.gov.zalast_img read more

Bill Gates Hears Young People Debate Tough World Issues

first_imgLast month, global entrepreneur and philanthropist Bill Gates surprised students by sitting in the audience as they debated some of the most challenging global issues facing their generation.Hosted by Ore Oduba, with a performance from George the Poet and judged by a star-studded and expert panel including Jamal Edwards, Tina Daheley, Emma Thompson and Jon Snow, the event saw Robert Clack School of Science from Dagenham, London take on Mount St Mary’s school from Leeds. The event, ‘Comic Relief presents: The Big Debate with young people’, was inspired by Debate Mate and run in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and was the final ‘showcase’ in a series of debates run by Debate Mate during the 2017 Red Nose Day campaign.Bill Gates was in the audience, which included over 250 students from around the UK as the two schools debated the motion, “This House Believes That, for People in Developing Countries, the World is Getting Better”. After listening to the debate, Bill surprised the room with an inspirational talk focused on the progress that has been made in improving the lives of those in some of the world’s poorest communities. He then took questions from students in the audience, before Robert Clack School of Science who argued for the proposition were named winners of the debate.Liz Warner, CEO, Comic Relief, said “Comic Relief is really interested in hearing from and engaging with young people who will live with the consequences of the decisions we make about the global future. It’s great to be able to provide a rare platform for young people from tough backgrounds to air their views. We have found the experience working with Debate Mate, who run debating clubs in some of the most deprived areas of the UK, really rewarding. We are also very pleased to host Bill Gates today and give the students in this debate the opportunity to be heard by someone who really can take these young people’s views to a world stage.”Debate Mate was set up in 2008 to inspire and engage young people from some of the UK’s most disadvantaged areas in today’s most critical issues and to provide a platform for their voices to be heard.last_img read more

Mozilla relaunches Project Things as WebThings an open platform for monitoring and

first_imgYesterday, the Mozilla IoT team announced that ‘Project Things’ is now out from its early experimental phase with a new name, ‘WebThings’. Mozilla WebThings is an open platform that allows you to monitor and control devices over the web. This project by Mozilla is an open source implementation of Web of Things, which defines software architectural styles and programming patterns that allow real-world objects to be a part of the World Wide Web. The idea here is to create a decentralized Internet of Things by providing “things”, URLs on the web to make them linkable and discoverable. Mozilla WebThings comprises of two components: WebThings Gateway WebThings Gateway is privacy and security-focused software distribution built for smart home gateways. It enables you to directly monitor and control your smart home gateways over the web, without relying on a middleman. Mozilla further announced that WebThings Gateway 0.8 is now available for download. This release comes with a feature that allows users to privately log data from their smart home devices. This logged data can also be visualized with interactive graphs. “This feature is still experimental, but viewing these logs will help you understand the kinds of data your smart home devices are collecting and think about how much of that data you are comfortable sharing with others via third-party services,” said Ben Francis, a Software Engineer at Mozilla. This release also brings in new alarms capabilities for devices like smoke, carbon monoxide, and motion detectors. With this new feature, users can configure rules to alert them when an alarm is triggered while they are away or check whether an alarm is currently active. The team has also started working on a new version of WebThings Gateway for OpenWrt, a Linux operating system targeting embedded devices. This version will be designed to act as a WiFi access point itself, instead of just connecting to an existing wireless network as a client. WebThings Framework WebThings Framework is a suite of reusable software components using which you can build your own web things, which directly expose the Web Thing API. This makes them easily discoverable by a Web of Things gateway or client. It can then automatically detect the device’s capabilities and monitor and control it over the web. These components are implemented in a range of languages including Node.js, Python, Java, Rust, and C++ (for Arduino). To know more in detail, check out the official announcement by Mozilla.
